چکیده

The U. C. Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer has measured the mid-infrared visibilities of the carbon star IRC +10216 and the red supergiant VY CMa. The dust shells around these sources have been previously shown to be time-variable, and these new data are used to probe the evolution of the dust shells on a decade time-scale, complementing contemporaneous studies at other wavelengths. Self-consistent, sphericallysymmetric models at maximum and minimum light both show the inner radius of the IRC +10216 dust shell to be much larger (150 mas) than that expected from the dust condensation temperature, implying that dust production has slowed or stopped in recent years. Apparently, dust does not form every pulsational cycle (638 days), and these mid-infrared results are consistent with recent near-IR imaging which indicates little or no new dust production in the last three years (Tuthill et al. 2000). Spherically symmetric models failed to fit recent VY CMa data, implying that emission from the inner dust shell is highly asymmetric and/or time-variable. Mid-infrared Interferometry on Spectral Lines. Iii. Ammonia and Silane around Irc ]10216 and Vy Canis Majoris

Using the University of California Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer with a radio frequency (RF) Ðlter bank, the Ðrst interferometric observations of mid-infrared molecular absorption features of ammonia and silane with very high spectral resolution (j/*jD 105) were made. Under the 3 4 assumptions of spherical symmetry and uniform outÑow, these new data permitted the molecular stratiÐcat...

THE RADIATIVE PATTERN AND ASYMMETRY OF IRC +10216 AT 11 m MEASURED WITH INTERFEROMETRY AND CLOSURE PHASE

The unusual source IRC +10216 is the brightest stellar object at mid-infrared wavelengths in the northern hemisphere. Adding to its distinctiveness, the dust around IRC +10216 almost completely enshrouds the star and has an extremely complex distribution. We report the imaging of IRC +10216 at 11.15 m with three telescopes and the closure phase at two different stellar phases. Three-baseline in...

Molecular line interferometry of VY Canis Majoris: Probing different regions of its envelope

Early in the history of molecular radio astronomy, very strong maser emission in the 1612 MHz satellite hyperfine structure line of OH was found toward the extremely luminous peculiar red M3/M4II supergiant VY CMa, pinpointing it as a remarkable object. Apart from strong maser emission from the OH, H2O, and SiO molecules thermal emission has been detected toward VY CMa from CO and a number of o...

The molecular emission-line spectrum of IRC +10216 between 330 and 358 GHz.

We have conducted a spectral line survey of IRC +10216 using the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory to an average sensitivity of < or approximately 95 mK. A deconvolution algorithm has been used to derive the continuous single-sideband spectrum from 330.2 to 358.1 GHz. A total of 56 spectral lines were detected of which 54 have been identified with 8 molecules and a total of 18 isotopomers. T...
